second hand revival
a restored cabinet build on memories, ready for a new home
One of the main ideas behind the furniture I make is to use second hand pieces that have a less bright future ahead (for whatever reasons) and turn those into something to shine inside a house, shop, restaurant, office, you name it. I love the idea of building upon what is already there, but make a real new product.
This piece has a special story. I received it from someone who had just lost their elderly mother and was in the process of clearing out her home. They couldn’t keep the furniture, but didn’t want to throw it away either. When I shared my intention to give it a new life, they said their mother would have loved the idea of a young person turning it into something creative and meaningful.
In the transformation, I preserved the original structure and reused the cabinet’s original hinges as subtle design details. I sanded the wood/fineer to its natural tones; painted and oiled it. The fabric in the doors is stiffened linen, the legs are adjusted legs of a side table and the handles are originally from the kitchen of the first house my parents bought more than 30 years ago. I guess my dad knew all that time ago that they would come in handy one day.
This is a one-of-a-kind piece, thoughtfully made and full of personal history — ready to shine in a new space.
This transformation is for sale! Please let me know if you’re interested.
